How to Make Your Life Easier as a Single Parent

July 18th 2011 -

Becoming a single parent isn’t something most people plan for, but it’s a situation more and more people are finding themselves in nowadays. It has always been a difficult thing to raise a child as a single parent, but it was much worse a few decades ago, when it was unaccepted socially. It is even harder than ever, while living in these difficult economic times. Being a single parent is difficult, as this article will show, but there are worse things that could happen to your child, and even you.

If you need professional help, never be afraid to ask, even when it is for your child. There is often a painful situation, such as a death or divorce, associated with being a single parent, and this can be hard for everyone involved. Too often, the single parent has enough problems, and doesn’t always think about the situation through the eyes of the child. If you notice changes in your child, at home or school, it might be a good idea to consider counseling. It is most important to think of your child, but in this situation you probably need help, also. Quite often you will need more than the help of your friends or your family. In many instances, transition to the single life will go smoother when you and your child have counseling. When you become a single parent a change of career may also be in order. Sometimes, what you need is an actual career. Some jobs work better for single parents than others you may consider. If your children get home from school by 3, a typical 9 to 5 schedule would not work. An occupation, such as nursing or other medical fields, provide flexible hours which help greatly. Online marketing, writing, graphics, and web design provide the opportunity to work at home. A flexible schedule and a reliable source of income are two pivotal areas you should look for in a job when you are a single parent.

Single parents sometimes get so caught up in their responsibilities that they neglect their own needs. Relaxation is one of those things that everyone needs, along with times of being alone. It may take some creativity to find time for yourself, but if you plan ahead you can do it. Enlisting a family member for childcare, or perhaps one of your friends as a babysitter, so you can get away for some time to regroup without your child. Depending on whether you would unwind better by yourself or with a friend, you could go to an afternoon movie alone or otherwise, or meet a friend for coffee.

There are many decisions that single parents have to make about raising their child, but with all of the support available, even financial issues can be solved. Since there are so many single parents today, you shouldn’t find it hard to meet others in this situation, and this can make it possible to create a helpful support system. Even when your situation seems hopeless, it still is better to keep your eyes on the best things possible, than worrying about your problem.
